- <p> DIED. Glenn McCarthy, 81, flamboyant Texas oilman whose
- rags-to-riches saga inspired Edna Ferber's book Giant and the
- movie of the same title; in Houston. McCarthy parlayed an
- investment in a dry-cleaning shop and two gas stations into
- oil-drilling ventures that made him a millionaire at 26. At its
- height, in 1949, the $200 million empire assembled by the "King
- of the Wildcatters" included a 15,000-acre ranch, a Detroit
- steel mill, a chemical company and the flashy $21 million
- Shamrock Hotel in Houston.
